Discover What's Really Causing Your Thyroid Symptoms.

Thyroid Testing in Wilmington, NC

If your thyroid labs came back "normal" but you still feel exhausted, foggy, and not like yourself, the problem is usually what was never tested. Wilmington Functional Medicine runs root-cause thyroid testing most doctors skip — a complete thyroid panel, adrenal and hormone testing, gut health testing, and food sensitivity testing — then builds your plan around what the results actually show.

Why Do Standard Thyroid Labs Miss the Problem?

Most doctors check TSH and call it done. TSH is a screening signal from your pituitary gland. It is not a picture of how your thyroid actually works.

TSH tells you nothing about how much active thyroid hormone reaches your cells, whether your immune system is attacking the gland, or what stress, gut problems, and food reactions are doing to the whole system. That is why two people can share the same "normal" TSH and feel completely different. One feels fine. The other is gaining weight, losing hair, and fighting brain fog every afternoon.

The difference usually shows up in the tests nobody ordered. We wrote more about this in what root-cause thyroid testing looks for.

What Symptoms Mean It Is Time for Deeper Testing?

Root-cause testing earns its keep when symptoms pile up without a clear answer. If several of these sound familiar, your standard labs are not telling the whole story:

That list is not a diagnosis. It is a sign that the standard test was aimed at the wrong question. If you are living this, our page on thyroid symptoms with normal labs is written for you.

What Does a Complete Thyroid Panel Show?

A complete thyroid panel measures TSH, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. Together these markers tell the whole story: how hard your pituitary is pushing, how much hormone your thyroid makes, how much becomes active T3, how much gets blocked as Reverse T3, and whether your immune system is attacking the gland.

Each marker answers a question that the others cannot. TSH shows the signal. Free T4 shows the supply. Free T3 shows what your cells are actually running on. Reverse T3 shows the brake pedal. Antibodies show whether the gland is under immune attack. One number cannot do five jobs.

This is the panel we run before anything else. The complete thyroid panel page breaks down each marker in plain words.

Why Test Adrenal and Hormone Levels?

Thyroid hormone does not work alone. Cortisol, your main stress hormone, directly controls how your body converts T4 into active T3. DHEA and your sex hormones shift alongside it. When those are off, everything you do for your thyroid underperforms — including medication you may already be taking.

So when your symptoms point to stress, sleep loss, or hormone shifts, we test cortisol, DHEA, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. See adrenal and hormone testing for what those markers reveal.

What Does Gut Health Have to Do with My Thyroid?

Most of your immune system lives in your gut. Gut infections, dysbiosis, and weak digestion drive immune activity — and Hashimoto's is an immune attack on your thyroid. Gut problems also block absorption of the exact nutrients your thyroid needs to make hormone.

Gut testing shows what is actually living in your digestive tract and how well it is working. Read more on gut health testing.

Could Food Sensitivities Be Affecting My Thyroid?

Food sensitivities keep the immune system fired up all day long. For many patients with thyroid antibodies, specific foods are fueling the reaction that is attacking the gland. Testing points to which foods are the problem instead of guessing and cutting out everything you enjoy.

See food sensitivity testing for how we use it.

How Does the Root-Cause Thyroid Protocol Work?

Our approach is simple: testing first, plan second. It starts with a free 15-minute discovery call, where we hear your history and decide which tests fit your case. Then we run the testing, walk you through the results, and build your plan around what we find — nutrition, lifestyle, and support matched to your markers, not a generic checklist.

Nothing here requires guessing. Measure what is broken, then fix what is broken.

What If I Have Already Been Diagnosed?

A diagnosis does not close the case. Plenty of patients come to us with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's already on paper and a medication that only half-worked. Testing shows why — an immune attack nobody addressed, poor conversion, a stress pattern underneath it all.

If that is your situation, you do not need to start over. You need the missing data.

Our Wilmington office works with patients across coastal North Carolina, including Leland, Hampstead, Jacksonville, and Pender County.

Testing first. Plan second. Start with a free 15-minute discovery call with our team.
