Discover What's Really Causing Your Thyroid Symptoms.

About Thyroid Doctor NC

Thyroid Doctor NC is a thyroid-focused practice site run by Wilmington Functional Medicine in Wilmington, NC. We work with patients who have been told their thyroid labs are normal but still feel exhausted, foggy, and unlike themselves. Our team runs the root-cause testing most doctors skip — a complete thyroid panel, adrenal and hormone testing, gut health, and food sensitivity testing — and builds your plan around what the results actually show.

Who Is Thyroid Doctor NC?

Wilmington Functional Medicine, the practice behind Thyroid Doctor NC, serves patients throughout the Wilmington area — Leland, Hampstead, Jacksonville, Pender County, and the wider coastal NC region. Thyroid Doctor NC exists because the thyroid is where most of our patients get stuck. Fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, brain fog — these aren't diagnoses. They're signals, and the thyroid is behind more of them than most doctors check for.

Why Does Thyroid Care Need Its Own Focus?

Because standard thyroid care stops too early. A TSH result in range gets labeled "normal," and the visit ends — even when you still feel terrible.

TSH alone doesn't tell you whether your body is converting thyroid hormone properly. It doesn't tell you whether Epstein-Barr virus is triggering autoimmune activity. It doesn't tell you whether gluten or dairy is creating the intestinal permeability that's driving your inflammation. And it definitely doesn't tell you whether your adrenal system is so depleted that no amount of thyroid medication will make you feel better.

We built this practice to find all of it — because looking at the thyroid in isolation rarely works, and you deserve better than "your labs are normal, here's an antidepressant."

Your symptoms have a cause. Let's find it in 15 minutes.

Who Will You Work With?

You'll work with Dr. Hilary Rutledge, DC, DABCI and Dr. Mathew Bradshaw, DC, AFMCP — functional medicine practitioners who got into this work for the same reason most patients call us: the standard system stopped before it found the answer.

Dr. Rutledge is a chiropractor-turned-functional medicine doctor and longtime Wilmington resident with more than two decades of practice behind her. Dr. Bradshaw blends natural healing principles with advanced functional medicine training, and he knows firsthand what it takes to dig out of stubborn health problems the standard route couldn't explain. Each has a bio page with the full story.

What Is the Root-Cause Thyroid Protocol?

The Root-Cause Thyroid Protocol is how we put testing and planning together. We test, we don't guess: every patient goes through a thorough intake and testing before we recommend anything. Then we build a plan around the results instead of around a symptom list.

What that testing usually covers:

That's the difference between adjusting a dose and finding an answer. If you want the longer version, we wrote up how root-cause thyroid testing works.

How Do We Work With Patients?

Four commitments, in plain language. We test before we recommend anything. We look at root causes, not just symptoms. We look at the whole person — thyroid, gut, adrenals, immune system, diet, and stress all talk to each other, so we address all of it. And we work with you, not at you.

That last one matters more than people expect. Our discovery call exists because fit goes both ways. We want patients who are ready to do the work, and we want you to feel confident in the process before you commit to anything.

Most patients come to us after months or years of partial answers — a borderline TSH here, a shrug there, a prescription that changed nothing. Many are juggling work, kids, and a body that no longer cooperates. We plan care around real life, which means clear priorities instead of twenty-step protocols nobody can follow.

What Happens First?

It starts with a free 15-minute discovery call by phone — no obligation, no pressure. You tell us what's been going on. We tell you how we'd approach it and whether our style of care fits your situation. Then you decide what happens next, and "nothing" is a perfectly good answer.

Ready for real answers? The first conversation costs nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnosis before I book a call?

No. Plenty of people call us precisely because they don't have a diagnosis — they have symptoms, a "normal" lab slip, and no answers. The discovery call is a conversation, not an appointment, and nothing about it requires a prior diagnosis, a referral, or recent lab work. Bring whatever you have and we'll take it from there.

Do you work alongside my other doctors?

Yes. We look at root causes while your primary care doctor and any specialists manage acute and conventional care. We don't ask you to drop anyone. When testing turns up something that belongs with a specialist, we say so. Coordinated care gets better results than either extreme — "just take this pill" or "throw out everything your doctor said."

Where do you see patients?

Our practice is based in Wilmington, NC, and we regularly work with patients from Leland, Hampstead, Jacksonville, Pender County, and across coastal NC. Many appointments can be handled by phone or telehealth, so distance doesn't have to stop you from getting a full workup. The discovery call itself is always by phone.

Is this only for Hashimoto's?

No. Hashimoto's is the most common reason people find us, but we also work with hypothyroidism without an autoimmune component, hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease, thyroid nodules, and the "something's wrong but my labs are normal" crowd. If the thyroid is involved in how you feel, it's worth a conversation — even if nobody has named the problem yet.
